The Importance of Scholarships at McCombs
My name is Tom Gilligan, and I’m the Dean of the McCombs School of Business. My role in that capacity is to help set the school’s strategic vision and work to ensure we have the resources necessary to implement the vision.
I think gifts are very, very important to the mission of the McCombs School of Business. Students are under increasing financial pressure in these times to pay for their college education. The pressure comes from the fact that it’s more costly to come to college than it used to be, and with some families, that pushes them out of the ability to go to a very high-quality school like the McCombs School of Business.

Gifts of fellowship or scholarship make that happen. They provide an opportunity that wouldn’t exist otherwise. And the opportunity is not just for a student to come to school here, the opportunity is for a student to come and be transformed here.
Scholarships provide opportunities for students that wouldn’t exist otherwise
Hi, my name is Cindy Lo, and I studied Management Information Systems and business honors program here at the University of Texas. So what I’m doing now is I own a company called Red Velvet Events, and we do corporate productions for Fortune 500. If I had not gone to the University of Texas, probably I wouldn’t have landed my first client — because my first client was the University of Texas. And I’m very, very thankful for that. When I started, I reached out to my network here, and they were the first ones to jump on board.
So, if my kids were to ask me now, you know, how the scholarship impacted my life, I definitely would explain to them that one: Regardless, Mommy would have gone to college, but it would have been a very difficult decision to go to a university that, you know, covers it versus a university that I would have had to struggle in. The second is I always want to remind them of how there are very generous people out there, and I would want them to understand that it’s very important to show our appreciation to all those people because it’s not just one person that can make a difference, it is a team effort.
